Chase Scene Final Storyboard:

I was in charge of the second re-filming of the chase scene but I used the ideas from Raman's previous storyboard and just altered the location. I had an idea of shooting it around the bridge near school and ended up coming up with this storyboard.

Firstly I wanted our victim to be running along roads with the villain in the background, using a variety of camera angles.
I then wanted her running onto the bridge and along it still with the villain behind, using camera angles where she is running towards and away from the camera as it would be good to edit them so the shots alternate.

Still with the victim running on the bridge, I really liked the idea of her looking over the bridge down to the motorway, almost as if she is contemplating suicide but decides not to. I wanted to do this in a POV shot as I think it would look effective and would give the audience an insight into her feelings at this moment.
She then runs towards the other side of the bridge and goes down the stairs, I included a POV shot which would could alternate with the shots of her running down.
The villain then comes down behind her and as the victim lies down on the stone bit under the bridge, he finally catches up with her.

The chase scene then ends with the original shot that Raman planned with the camera going into the victims mouth after she's been struggling for a few seconds. I liked this idea and planned to keep it in as a good way to transition from the chase scene to the death scene/flashbacks.

We ended up using this storyboard in our final filming session and we used most of the shots explained here, so hopefully we should be able to edit them so the footage can be cut down to around 30-35 seconds.

Our Film Opening Storyboard

Below shows the story board that we as a group planned. We tried to get all of the ideas that we have had so far into the sequence, linking to all the deconstructions and practical work that we have done through out this process, but also, relating to the result that we collected from our survey about the ideas we had for our film opening.

Drawing out the rough plan that we made together, I added notes about our ideas for camera angles and movement, costuming, lighting, sound and actions of the actors, where appropriate, along with small sketches of different shots that we would be taking.

All together, I feel as if my group and I now have a physical plan of what we are going to do, whereas before, we just had an idea. This storyboard is only our first, however, and due to time restraints of the two minuets and other aspects, the plan will probably change slightly to suit our circumstance more appropriately.

SHOT 1- Our production company animation will start off our opening sequence. This will be on a block screen with the animation that we will make run on top of it.

SHOT 2,3&4- Various changes in shot from over the shoulder shots to close ups to high angle shots of our victim running in a woods. The editing will be fast passed and various, symbolising panic and bringing tension to the scene, allowing the audience to see that she is in trouble and running away from something, or someone.

SHOT 5- At the end of the montage of different angled shots, an extreme close up will be taken of her eye showing tear marks and smudged makeup.

SHOT 6&7- This will be followed by a zooming in of her running away- symbolising the killer catching up with her.

SHOT 8- Followed by an over the shoulder shot of the killer pushing the victim against a tree.

SHOT 9- A zoom camera movement will go from the over the shoulder shot into the victims screaming mouth.

SHOT 10,11&12- Shot 10, 11 and 12 will be extreme close up shots of various stages in lighting where the killer is taking the victim back to his "hide out" and cutting into her

SHOT 12- This will be different as you will hear diegetic sounds of ripping and cutting and blood spurting, and see movement, to which the victim will finally be shown to be dead.

SHOT 13- The shots will then change to the killers point of view. It will show an over the shoulder shot of the killer cutting into his victim.

Shot 14&15- Changing shots of close ups and extreme close up shots of different parts of the killers body, showing the audience deformities and scars that he has.

SHOT 16- Then, a side close up shot of the killers face will be shown with the surgical mask on, hiding his features.

SHOT 17- After the killer finishes up, he takes a lump of body materials and places it into a bowl on the table next to his torture table.

SHOT 18&19- A mid shot of the killer standing up will appear, showing him to have gloves on, covered in dripping blood.

SHOT 20- Another close up shot will be shown of the killer turning a record player with the films "theme tune" will play.

SHOT 21- Then an over the shoulder shot of the killer sitting down and start writing in his diary will initiate the following disturbing "memories".

SHOT 22,23&24-As the killer is writing in the diary words such as "struggling", "blood pouring" and "death" will be shown. For example, "blood pouring" and the image of blood pouring out of the victims stomach will be shown in union on the screen, but only for a flash.

SHOT 25- As the scene is going through these different images, it also shows quick shots, getting closer and closer to the killer- building tension, along with the non-diegetic sound

SHOT 26- The final shot will be of the killers face showing some kind of shocking thing. We have not yet decided or confirmed this ending, but at this stage in planning and developing, this is what we plan to do.

Planing the Deaths Scenes AND Evaluation of Death Scene Trial

After the death scene trial, I realised that I, along with my group, have a few extra things that we need to plan and decide before we make the official shots and clips that might go in our film opening.

First of all, we needed to decide how the the victims would be killed. The aspects that we have taken from the idea of the victim being pregnant, I have put into a list, shown below, of how he could kill his victims:
  • while the foetus is being carved out of their torso, leading to them bleeding to death
  • by being strangled
  • by beheading them
  • by strangling them with the umbilical cord
Some of these ideas link to previous research that we have all done. The foetus being taken out of the torso links to the deconstruction of Creep and how the killer carved out the foetus' of the women that he victimised and the beheading idea links to the Shordtch location research where we saw a model head placed on a spike portrayed on top of a wall.

Se7en

Another aspect that we had to decide is when the killer would take these photos of his murders. I decided to look at a film that uses the idea of the killer taking pictures of his victims too, and ended up deconstructing Se7en.
When looking at the Se7en, I saw that the killer took a series of photos of one of his victims that he tied to a bed for just over a year, taking photos after set periods of time to see the victims deterioration through the year. A few screen grabs are shown below:

To the left shows the first photo taken of the man at the beginning of the year looking normal.

To the right shows the photo taken of the man near the end of the year that he was tied up looking as if he is decaying while still alive- a rather grotesque look.

This idea, although a good one, wouldn't really fit with out theme of killing, but taking the idea of the before and after stages of his victims, having a photo of his victims in their day to day lives- "stalker photos"- and a photo of his victims as they have died on his torture table.

Special FX

After taking this into account, I decided that it would be best, for our film opening, if we just got our killer to take photos of his victims after they have been killed, having the idea of the "stalker photos" within the theoretical "rest of the movie" that we will not be making.

When these photographs would be taken is closely linked to where they will be taken. As a group, we decided that the killer would take the photo after his victim is dead- lying on his "torture table".

Taking all of the research and planning that I have completed into account, I decided to do a special effects makeup investigation into the way the victims would be displayed:

First of all, I made an umbilical cord. One that we could use to "strangle" the victims of the killer.

To make this, I used scrunched up tissue paper, PVA glue, acrylic paint that was watered down and cling film to add the shiny, slim on the cord.

Once I had made this, i then used my neck as a model, and added bruising, with my bruising wheel, to show the special effects makeup that I would use on our victims to symbolise strangulation via the umbilical cord.

I also made a prosthetic stomach out of paper mache, nose and scar wax, the bruise wheel and fake blood.

Step by step, I covered a balloon in paper mache with two layers. This would give enough strength for the stomach to stay rounded.

I then popped the balloon and cut the excess paper mache from the bottom, creating a neat edge.
I turned up the sides of the edges so that it would be easier to apply to the stomach.

After drawing where I would cut the fake stomach so that it looked as if it had been torn open, I made the fake wound, peeling the material back.

Next, I  added cotton wool to the inside of the peeled back "skin" to show the muscle and tissue that would be there, along with the insides of the stomach. This was to symbolise the organs and tissues within the carved out stomach. I then painted them with red, brown and yellow tones to create a flesh effect.

Adding the fake blood was the last effect. I was originally planning on applying this prosthetic to myself, but I found that it was way too difficult to do it to myself, worrying about all of the dripping blood and getting everything stuck down properly at the angle that I was in.

The finished piece is quite good, and I think that if we use this effect in our film opening, it would be a success.

I then just experimented with cuts and bruises on different parts of my body that we could add to show the struggle before the victim got on the torture table.

To the left shows a graze  using thick "scab" blood and the bruise wheel to add colour and obviously bruising.

This investigation has allowed me to test out my ideas and also get more of a plan together, collating and developing them to get an appropriate representation of the slasher genre within this very important aspect of mise en scene that will play a large part within the film opening.
