Bedlam Mise en Scene Deconstruction

Within the one minuet five second clip, there are five different sets with five different people.

The first person in the sequence is a woman dressed in a short black dress, walking towards the sink within a un-decorated bathroom holding a number of baths and sinks, suggesting that it is a bathroom shared by a collection of people at the same time. This not usually seen in complexes, making it abnormal. The baths in the room are being filled up with a bubbling dark sludge substance. This is really unusual, making the viewer wonder what is going on. Throughout the sequence, close ups of the filling baths with the dark material spilling over the top are shown, adding to the build up of tension, with the build up of the substance, to the scene.

The picture then changes to show a young man sitting at a table. He is wearing a simple grey blazer and trousers along with a white shirt, but seems to blend into the colour of the room he is in, perhaps indicating that he is one of many people within
the the complex that he is in, and is no longer an individual, but a blend of the crowd.

An older man is also shown within the sequence. He is wearing a plain black suit, immediately making the audience think of a funeral, linking to grief and death- relating to the Bedlams supernatural horror genre. He is sitting in an office room with papers littering the floor. Later on into the sequence, the papers littering the floor are added to by papers that are on fire falling from the ceiling, possibly symbolising the destruction of rules and professionalism within the complex that all the character are in, indicating unlawful actions taking place there.

All of the rooms so far look badly maintained, as if the collective of people are within an abandoned building, giving an atmosphere of tension and suspense.

At this point, the scene goes back to the younger man, and you can see in the background a dripping substance coming down the walls, as if they are bleeding or crying out a dark liquid. This could represent the mans emotions because of his confinement within the room that he is in. The dripping substance behind the younger man then starts to drip onto his face from the ceiling, gradually covering him in this dark substance, showing his feeling of being consumed by his grief, or the darkness symbolised by the dripping substance.

Another character is added to the sequence around mid-way through the sequence. A young dark haired woman wearing a white dress, which could symbolise purity, is shown, however, the woman is within a badly kept room, on a bed, dancing around rather provocatively,  as if in a kind of trance, making the audience feel uneasy. This contrast of the white, pure representation of the girl and her dress and the shabby room with the sexual way that she is dancing,  is then enhanced further where the woman opens her eyes to show them completely black, as if she has been possessed. It has a supernatural and horror element to it, relating to Bedlam's genre.

Then, the last character comes into the video. He is wearing a straight jacket, and is sitting in a dark, dirty room with a single light bulb illuminating his surroundings. On the wall, you can see that there is the repetitive phrase "Save Kate" written. The bed in the background, the writing on the wall and the straight jacket would immediately make the audience think of a mental asylum and create tension with the idea of being confined and imprisoned physically and mentally.

A shot of ghost-like people moving through the man in the straight jackets room is then shown. The ghost-like people are shown to be nurses and doctors, enhancing the suspicion of the location being a mental asylum. But the close up to the man in the straight jackets eyes suggests that this may be in his mind.

Throughout the extract, there are scenes where you see the dark substance actually spilling over the edge of the bath. Also different shots of all of the characters appear quickly on the screen and and the first ladies reflection in the mirror not matching her movements, all adding to the suspense of the extract and showing almost supernatural actions. These all add to the build up of the extract, adding tension and suspense until the final climax at the end of the scene. This is a technique of how to get the audience to want to watch the actual TV-series, as this is a trailer for it.
Shots of the younger man with his body covered in the dripping black substance, the first woman, with her reflection watching her walk away, the other woman with her eyes completely black and the older man are then shown, as the final scene of the man in the straight jacket is on the screen with the light in his room flickering, ending the sequence.
